Spring is here, birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and GAP has it's first event of the year underway. A new "twist" on things - on Tuesday, May 4th, Drink! in downtown Myrtle Beach (5-Points) will host (drumroll please.......................)

“Taste of 5-Points Art & Music Springtacular!”

The event will begin at 6:00pm and be filled with local music, art (of course!) and light hors d'oeuvres. Angie Capone, The Paul Grimshaw Band and Tanglespeak will perform. A $10 suggested donation to come hang out wihth coolest cats in town. Pick up a 2010 GAP Calendar at the event if you haven't gotten one yet!

Creative Collaboration - Let it begin!

Global Awareness Project has been slowly defining itself, setting boundries and cultivating leadership from within for the last 2 years. It is an exciting time as we look to what will create a greater impact on service projects and organizations and how we can fuel them with the arts. We have recently rewarded two local artists with $1,000 grants to work alongside a service project to help give them High Impact Visibility and Promotion. GAP Board Member, Caitlin Beidler and founder of Redemption Art and Camp Hope is the recipient of one of the grants. Her grant sent her to Port Au Prince Haiti into the dangerous slums of Cite Soleil to assist non-profit organization, Help Tammy, Help Haiti paint a mural on a 20ft water tower. The other recipient of GAP's CC Grant was local photographer Paula Player. Paula has been a supporter of this program since discussions began over one year ago about how we can assist artists who have a heart for service. Paula has teamed up with Jenny Edwards, founder or Hearts Stories - a program that takes place in elementary school classrooms in North and South Carolina. Paula is helping Jenny to document the program through photography during the school year so Jenny can use the pictures to promote her program to other teachers and eventually more funding. Paula is also using her grant money to help Jenny with a new logo for her program.

· Build lasting and meaningful relationships between the artist and the organizations.
· Build leadership and confidence with artists that their work and ideas are valued by designating a certain % of the loan to compensate them for their work.

I arrived at the photo shoot not knowing quite what to expect. I'd never been on a professional photography set before, and I'm sure my amateurity showed. The photographer, Matt Silk, bless his heart, was spending his Sunday evening dealing with an artsy-fartsy jewelry maker, a bunch of high school kids in prom dresses, and rain clouds against a setting sun. So there I was, trying to stay out of the way while the girls were in hair-and-makeup and Matt was setting up and moving around lights. As the girls came out one by one with their hair perfectly coifed, I draped them in the jewelry I had custom made for their Katie's Project dresses. They were so young, but not at all silly or giddy with the glamor of it all. Matt was very patient with them, and them with him was he changed their poses over and over again - turn your head this way, tilt your head that way, put your elbow here, now lets try it there... They were all just as patient with me as I ran in and out of the shots adjusting crooked hanging necklaces, bracelets showing their clasps, and earrings hiding behind wind-blown tresses. Matt would snap a few shots, then we'd retreat into the studio to view them on the computer. Then back to the set, make a few adjustments, shoot a few more and repeat, until we had it - the perfect shot! What an experience. Thanks Global Awareness Project for introducing me to Katie's Project and for giving me the opportunity to have had such an amazing experience.

Pro-Bono work has always been an important part of my business, and each year I try to give something back to my community by creating images that can be used for a good cause. Two years ago it was a campaign for Citizens Against Spouse Abuse (CASA), and last year, our Street Reach campaign helped gain awareness for the homeless in Myrtle Beach. So when I was asked to help create images for Katie’s Project last month by the founders of The Global Awareness Project, I was immediately aboard.

Founded In 2007 by Katie Rhoden, Katie’s Project is essentially a dress bank providing dresses and formal accessories to high school girls in need of a little help so they may have the opportunity to attend their prom. A simple principle that has gained much attention. However Katie’s Project is much more than just supplying a prom dress or tuxedo. “We are instilling in these students that they are important too. We hope the goodwill they are experiencing through this project will reinforce what they are learning about community service and the value of helping others. Our hope is to help increase their self worth and willingness to give back once they have the opportunity” explains executive director Kathy Foxworth.

The purpose of our shoot was to illustrate the strength, confidence, and sense of empowerment that is brought to the surface of these young women when given opportunities that might not otherwise exist for them. Accompanying the dresses are custom jewelry pieces created by Kelly Mezzapelle, all of which will be auctioned off at the next Katie’s Project gala. Global Awareness Project's Board of Directors selected non-profits for their 2010 Calendar themed "Synergy". Local artists also applied and were selected to partner with the non-profit to create the art piece that will be highlighted in the calendar. GAP's board chose the theme "Synergy" to reflect the importance of collaboration and working together to create a better community.

I applied and was lucky enough to be chosen and paired with The Rape Crisis Center. To be completely honest, I wasn't sure where to start. Collaborating with such a serious organization was going to be very difficult, but I was ready to give it a go.

I met with Joyce Hart and some of the ladies at the center to discuss what the organization was all about and what they wanted to convey in the art piece. I found out that they not only help women that have survived sexual abuse, they also help men and children in similar situations, as well as people dealing with any other type of abuse, that need support and healing. They have a crisis hotline available 24/7 and provide the community with small groups to aid in recovery. The week that I met everyone, they were in the middle of planning a local awareness event. They are truly focused on getting victims the help they need as well as promoting prevention through outreach and community education.

After our first meeting, we schedule our second, so that I could come back and look through some old t-shirts that were designed at a previous RCC event. The event was held at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC and was a chance for survivors and family/friends of victims to tell their stories through words or artwork on t-shirts. They then hung the shirts from a line to show how many people are effected by sexual abuse.

I looked through at least 50 of these shirts and was taken back by almost all of them. Some were straight forward, "When you raped me, you broke my heart". Some were poetic and sad, "Giggles and laughter, braids and bows, she's so cute from head to toe, little did anyone know, she was being molested from the time she was one year old". One of the shirts stood out to me because it shown a light on such a terrible, unfortunate situation and inspired hope in healing. The front of the shirt said, " This was me, dead and barren, eternal winter" with a dead, leafless tree and storm clouds painted on it. The back was a bright and colorful tree with flowers and birds and said "Now, life lives here". I thought I could run with this idea and hopefully have a positive take on an otherwise negative subject.

While painting, the lyrics from the song "Blackbird," by The Beatles, "Take these broken wings and learn to fly," would not leave my mind, so I decided they needed to be included. All in all, I feel blessed to be involved with this project because GAP is doing great things to unite the community, spread culture and promote awareness of so many important issues.

Conway Main Street was thrilled to be matched with a truly talented photographer, Lynn Cole Daly, as we were in the process of capturing an image to enter in a special contest promoted by the National Trust for Historic Preservation called, “This Place Matters.” This Place Matters is a web-based photo sharing campaign to empower Americans to weigh in on places they feel are architecturally or culturally significant. People nationwide are able to post stories and photos to the National Trust’s website that matter to them.

Lynn helped us marry our vision for This Place Matters Campaign and the Global Awareness Project calendar. Truth be told, we did question our original vision after the photo shoot was scheduled, but when the day of the shoot finally arrived and everything was in place it was obvious that Lynn’s vision had captured the message…no matter what your age, your color, your religion, your profession, your education, we all identify with historic places in our community and we all share a common battle cry-“This Place Matters!”

Our photo is the beloved building that once housed the Side-Wheeler Restaurant which was heavily damaged by fire this past spring. Located at Conway’s Riverwalk along the Waccamaw River, this historic building, constructed in the 1890’s, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The thought of losing this piece of history would be a huge loss to downtown Conway. Work was recently started to reconstruct the building preserving as much of the original building as possible. We are sure everyone would agree with us… This Place Matters!

First day of school for GAP???

Global Awareness Project has had one eventful summer. From hosting the Art Walks at The Market Common to selecting our partners for the 2010 calendar to getting ready to hire an intern to help with some of the administrative load we have accumulated in the last 2 1/2 years. We have found running a non-profit organization to be one of the most rewarding yet challenging things we have ever done. But, the support of our friends, the community and pushing GAP to a place where it can stand on it's own two feet is a bit like watching all of the parents today on facebook talking about sending their child off to school. Like a proud parent, we are ready to take the leap into the next phase of our organization and let go of the reins and trust that we built a strong enough foundation to make it last.

3rd Annual Cultural Visions Art Show - SUCCESS

work, 100 artists, 45 volunteers, 30 performers, 5 restaurants and 1 amazing venue.
Global Awareness Project's Cultural Visions Art Show held at 2001 Nightclub was our biggest event to date. Raising close to $9,500 and selling over $5,000 in art work it was our highest grossing fundraiser yet. In these questionable economic times we have to ask ourselves how this was possible? You cannot measure success in dollars only and the GAP team seems to be constantly asking the following questions:
How can we measure community? How can we measure the strength found in support? How can we package the freshness in forming new friendship and the joy in re-connecting with old ones? How can we brand the willingness to put in hours of volunteer work to transform something bare to something beautiful? These questions and more were answered the night of the show but how do we keep it going? GAP's 2010 Calendar Application for Artists

Dear Artist,

We are pleased to present you with an opportunity to be a part of Global Awareness Project’s 2010 non profit promotional art calendar, ‘Synergy.” The Global Awareness Project is a 501c3 tax exempt organization whose goals are to assist in the promotion of non profit agencies through multimedia art, photojournalism and documentary work. GAP has distributed over 40,000 calendars, free of charge to residents of Horry County over the last 2 years. Our calendars have also been given out in over 10 countries all over the world!

The calendars showcase a different non-profit each month with a short statement about who they are and what services they provide to the community. The entire calendar connects the residents of the Grand Strand to their events, fund-raisers and holidays by highlighting activities throughout the year.

Our board of directors has made some exciting changes to the calendar for 2010. The theme this year will be “Synergy” and will showcase collaborations between artists and non-profit organizations. The GAP team has had extensive conversations and team building exercises all focused around the idea of building relationships and how to get more people involved with our project. After the success of several art shows, local artists keep asking us how they can get more involved. We have created an opportunity right here to experience a “Global Awareness Project.” GAP’s “Synergy” Project will highlight the positive impact of collaboration.

Attached is an artist application to apply to be chosen for the calendar project. A special committee outside of GAP’s founders and Board of Directors will select the 12 artists chosen to participate in the calendar. The calendar committee will pair up an artist with a non-profit organization. Selected artists will be required to put in 10 hours of volunteer time with the said organization to learn about their mission and how they serve our community. The artist will create an art piece especially for the non-profit. The piece will not only be the selection for the calendar but will also be donated back to the organization after it spends the 2010 year as a collection being shown around the Grand Strand. The calendar launch, in October will also be a special art show for the twelve participating artists in the calendar project. Each artist will have up to 20 feet of wall space to showcase their work.

On the following page you will find an application to help us become familiar with you, your work and why you would be a fit for this project. Please complete the questions and email it back to info@theglobalawarenessproject.org no later than May 31st. There are twelve opportunities to be featured in the calendar. Our board will meet and review the applications received. The selected artists will be notified via email by the end of May.

This yearly fundraiser for Global Awareness Project focuses on bringing together all walks of our community to highlight and showcase local and regional culture. Great music, amazing food and plenty of entertainment is on the agenda, once again.

We are searching for 100 artists to participate in our 3rd annual event at 2001 nightclub on March 31st, Show will be from 7-10pm set up will be Monday afternoon, we will need help so if you can come for an extra hour that would be great.We are including bothe the AAST and CCU students this year and taking over the whole club.We are looking for 8 artists that would like to offer a peice for auction, you will gain free show entry at one of the premeir locations.

Global Awareness Project was one of the lucky 6 to have an opportunity to create a memorable land mark this holiday season. GAP was selected by Horry County Ace to be a part of their Signature Sleigh Project at the Market Common. Have an inspiring evening stroll at Market Common through the entire month of December where the sleighs will be on exhibit. Global Awareness project teams Kimberly Dawn Clayton, Caitlin Beidler, Terry Brennan and Michael Tisdale were also artists selected to paint the sleighs.
The six sleighs were constructed by City of Myrtle Beach personnel based on blueprints of historic sleighs from the late 1800s. The wood for their construction, as well as the paint and other supplies for the artists, was provided by The Market Common.

Art Museum of Myrtle Beach to hold 1st Calendar Launch and Signing The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum will host a calendar signing event for GAP’s 2009 calendar, from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7. Each calendar is filled with artwork by students at the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology, who will autograph their work. The event is free and open to the public.

Lady in a Box, 12 minutes
In this dark comedy loosely based on the Schiavo case, Sarita Choudhury stars as a bedeviled lawyer trying to stop an American family's absurd feud over a macabre heirloom. The short was licensed for international broadcast by the Mini Movie Channel (US/Europe), PropellerTV (UK), and Ouat Media (Canada).

Writer/director Jeff Stanley teaches at NYU Tisch School of the Arts Department of Dramatic Writing, where he earned his MFA, and served as a guest teacher in Croatia at The Imaginary Academy summer film and theatre workshop sponsored by the Soros Foundation. He co-wrote and will direct Jane Henry: A Comedy Short, which has been optioned to Peter Farrelly, Charlie Wessler & GreeneStreet Films. Screenwriting awards include the Laurel Entertainment Award for Screenwriting Excellence, the New York Picture Company Award for Best Dramatic Screenplay, and finalist showings for the Nicholl Fellowship and the Austin Film Festival Screenwriting Competition. My Tale of Two Cities, preview, 13 minutes
In the tradition of Super Size Me and Roger & Me, My Tale of Two Cities is a poignant and funny film about coming home, and how people, and cities, reinvent themselves. St. Elmo's Fire screenwriter and TV writer/producer Carl Kurlander did go home again, only to find that his hometown of Pittsburgh, which had built America with its steel, produced Andy Warhol AND consecutive superbowl victories, and invented everything from aluminum to the Big Mac, was struggling in a new age. As Pittsburgh is the real-life home of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," Kurlander asked his neighbors -- from Steeler great Franco Harris to philanthropist Teresa Heinz Kerry -- how his hometown could once again become "The City of Champions. Dealing with issues of family, community, and place, Kurlander finds that each neighbor makes a difference in determining how a city--or as this movie seems more timely than ever-- a country, comes back. My Tale of Two Cities premiered at the 2008 Sonoma Valley Film Festival.

Carl Kurlander worked in Hollywood for two decades as a screenwriter and television writer/producer under contract for Columbia, Paramount, Universal, Twentieth Century Fox, Orion, and Disney Studios, and writing and producing over 150 episodes of television for NBC, Fox, and CBS. He also wrote “The F Word: How to Survive Your Family” with Louie Anderson. Kurlander is a recipient of the MCA-Universal Studios Scholar Award and a graduate of Duke University. He co-founded and is the Executive Producer of the non-profit Steeltown Entertainment Project and is currently a Visiting Distinguished Senior Lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh.

Set against the backdrop of the New York City Golden Gloves, the world’s largest boxing tournament, four semifinalists battle each other and their own obstacles for a chance at a better future for themselves and their families. Directors Joshua Durham, Sam Mestman, and Matt Mochary document each competitor’s run to see which heavyweight will live out his potential in the title match. The Gloves premiered at the Ninth Annual 2008 New York International Latino Film Festival presented by HBO.

After graduating NYU film school in 2002, Sam Mestman co-founded the indie film collective Blatantly Subtle Productions, through which he directed, shot and edited dozens of short films for regular screenings across New York City. His screenplay Time Square Hustle was a 2005 semifinalist for the Sundance Feature Filmmakers Program, and shooting will begin this year. Mestman has edited for television, commercials, documentaries and fiction projects. The Gloves is his feature-length directorial debut.
Prior to directing The Gloves, Josh Durham served as Producer and Assistant Editor on the HBO film Addiction. His current documentary film projects include Lil Poison, a feature-length film due out in 2008 and a surfing documentary shooting on four continents. Durham taught film at the New York Film Academy and at Princeton University, and has worked in every genre of film including docs, fiction and commercial.
The Gloves is the second film directed and produced by Matt Mochary, CEO of Mochary Films. His first film, Favela Rising, which he co-directed with Jeff Zimbalist, was named Best Feature Film at the 2005 International Documentary Association Distinguished Documentary Achievement Awards.

Linus
In this narrative story of homecoming, Linus, now a priest, returns to the old stomping grounds, ostensibly to officiate the funeral of one of the gang, but really for a deeper purpose. His search for his childhood friend is hindered by the very people he asks to help him. Eventually he finds the familiar face, and things are as they were, even if they are somewhat different.

Linus Director and Executive Producer Zac Whinnem is the Supervising Producer of GameplayHD, a 24-hour video game channel. He's produced for CBS, ABC, ESPN, Lifetime, VH-1, and at the NBC Olympics, where he won two Emmys for his work on the 2004 Summer Games in Athens.

The Silly Side of Serious, 40 minutes
Global Awareness Project (GAP), in collaboration with Hart Media, journeys all the way to Ecuador and back home to South Carolina to explore a world of service work and the ideas that motivate those who keep it spinning. Uncovering some of the fun ways we can answer questions about what it means to live in our present day global community, this interview driven film brings out the kid in audiences of all ages. GAP collaborates with seven other non-profit organizations in the United States and South America, along with teachers and volunteers, to produce a promotional story for service related organizations.

"Jewel's of the South" Folk Art Festival

The theme for this event is titled, “Jewels of the South.” Each artist in the festival is a bright light, a glimmering Jewel making their little corners of the world (or their 10x10 tent at the festival!) a beautiful and organic place for our attendees to visit and explore. The end result at the festival will be a beautiful strand of visual and sensory delights.
The Art Festival will take place at the Cooper House Event Center, a refurbished Victorian house and General Store situated by an old swing bridge along the Intercoastal Waterway. Artist booths will be spread out over the entire property including in the Cooper House, inside the General Store and on the lawn. GAP goes to Ecuador!

During the month of July, Global Awareness Project founders, Jessica Durivage and Carl Kerridge will travel to Ecuador to film a documentary for local non profit organization SOS Healthcare Inc. Jessica and Carl will be traveling with videographer and owner of Hart to Hart Media, Thomas Hart. The team of three will recreate SOS Healthcare’s Ambassador for Youth program with several organizations throughout the country.
As Ambassadors for Youth they will work with children of all ages to motivate and instill a sense of hope to make a positive difference through innovative and educational workshops. The GAP team will work with SOS’s own Jesse Jordan throughout the month of June to train and prepare for their trip. To keep up with GAP’s journey in South America please visit their travel blog, Tres Amigos in Ecuador. They will be filming a documentary which they plan to show at Global Awareness Project’s film festival at the IMAX Theatre in the fall. When you have a dream or a vision of something and then it actually begins to come true... well, all I have to say is that what makes these nights of blogging at 10:40pm worth it.
Global Awareness Project teamed up with Thomas Hart, owner of Hart to Hart Media to help United Way of Horry County with their promtional campaign. Southern Portraits and Accents donated their studio space for the day as we took over the place with our Live United t-shirts on. It was a great day to be a part of this community as the Live United campaign will showcase people from all over Horry County who help to make where we live a better place everyday.

Welcome to the month of May! Global Awareness Project is in full bloom with the success of their "What's Your Cultural Vision?" Art Show held April 29th at 2001 Nightclub. Over 600 Grand Strand residents were in attendance to mingle amongst the 79 artists displaying their work. 30 artists were students at the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology. Local eateries such as Bonefish Grill, Umi's Pacific Grill, Thoroughbreds, Croissants Bakery, Bimini's Oyster Bar and The Office offered up some of the best selections on their menu to guests. Visual art was not the only medium on hand; live music thanks to Paul Grimshaw, Tom Hanlin and Bobbie and Aaron Holt. Dance exhibitions were given by students from the Myrtle Beach School of Performing Arts and The Academy for Arts, Science and Technology. If that is not enough excitement for you, Dawn Yaeger, owner of Shanti Yoga Studio amazed the crowd with a flawless yoga demonstration and local artist, Cailtin Biedler painted live during the performance. The Pleasure Soul DJ crew kept the beat fresh all evening with returning special guest DJ and master of ceremonies, DJ Mickey Durivage from New York City.
GAP's efforts towards bringing the community of Myrtle Beach together to promote charity organizations through the arts raised just over $12,000 and selling 49 art pieces. All proceeds from the show go towards funding their 2009 "What's Your Cultural Vision?" calendar featuring art work from the students at the Academy for Arts, Science and Technology and creating awareness for twelve local non profit organizations.

Before GAP, there were two people that wanted to do something....and now only one year later here we are. Building a foundation of something that we both know is bigger than the both of us. The higher dream keeps things fresh and real. The sweet nuggets of encouragement you receive from a supporting friend or someone you've helped.
But, a good and strong foundation is laid brick by brick and takes time. It takes patience, determination and will. I am learning lessons in these qualities, daily. Only four days until the art show, Carl and I are diggin' deep and finding gold.
We imagined the possibilites and now the reality is upon us so desperately wanting....to shine.

Mission Statement:
Step Up! a community volunteer center will mobilize the citizens of Horry County and the broader coastal community to meet critical needs through volunteer service, increasing civic engagement. Our goal is to encourage people to make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of those around them by contributing their time and efforts to worthwhile, direct service experiences in partnership with over 100 non-profit community-based agencies.
Step Up!, Volunteer Center provides people with easy access to a wide variety of opportunities to their community through civic service.

For example, Step Up!:
-Connects people with volunteer opportunities doing centralized recruitment and referral of volunteers through individual interviews, directories, searchable database listings and more;
-Manage or promote, community-wide service events such as National Volunteer Week, Family Volunteer Day, or large-scale community volunteer events;
-Design programs targeted for special populations of volunteers, including families, youth, seniors, employees, students, or court-referred volunteers;
-Involve volunteers in ongoing direct service volunteer programs of the Volunteer Center itself, such as mentoring or tutoring programs; and

GAP and the AAST have joined forces in the creation of the 2009 “What’s Your Cultural Vision” calendar. Students from the Academy with design and submit work to be considered for the calendar. Global Awareness Project’s art committee and a panel of local professionals will judge the work at an art show scheduled for the fall of 2008. The selected prints will be featured in the 2009 calendar along side local non profit organizations. GAP’s 2008 Lowcountry calendar was distributed to over 20,000 Grand Strand Residents.

The Global Awareness Project (GAP) is hosting the second annual “What’s Your Cultural Vision” art show on Tuesday, April 29th from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. at 2001 Nightclub to highlight local area artists and to kickoff the 2008 calendar fundraising.

For the second year, GAP will bring together more than 40 artists who will display work throughout the entire club and live entertainment including music, theatre and dance as well as food from several local restaurants.

The event is free to the public with a $10 donation recommended at the door. The art show is the kick off fundraiser for the 2008 year. Global Awareness Project is an innovative nonprofit agency designed to showcase humanitarian, environmental and cultural activities in local communities and worldwide.

Through discussions and involvement with non profit organizations, co founders Carl Kerridge and Jessica Durivage recognized that one of their greatest unmet needs is the ability to build community awareness of their missions, activities and accomplishments. That less than 5% of annual budgets are devoted to marketing and promoting awareness of their causes and visions. The Global Awareness Project (GAP) seeks to provide a stronger voice for these invaluable community service organizations through promotional and marketing support utilizing multi media art, photojournalism and documentary work. The Global Awareness Project accomplishes this through creative projects, art shows and global events designed to foster GAP's core values of community connection, awareness and education.
